In this video we dive deep into the differences between two of the best multi day hunting packs we’ve tested to date. In this EXO vs Initial Ascent review, we compare these two hunting packs as we’ve found them both to be some of the best elk hunting packs, best multi day hunting packs, and best hunting packs for hauling out meat.

Finding the best hunting pack your for your specific needs can be difficult, particularly given that you don’t truly know what issues might come us once you get in the field and use the pack on hunting trips. Because of this challenge, I wanted to bring my experience over the last 6 years with these hunting backpacks to help you determine what will work best for you.

Exo Mountain Gear packs, and particularly the Exo K4 pack took the industry by storm with it’s updated design, combining its incredible load hauling ability with excellent day to day comfort. Similarly, Initial Ascent Packs has been making a name for themselves in a big way of late, touting some of the best load hauling ability on the market.

That said, there are some stark differences between the Exo Mountain Gear K4 pack and the Initial Ascent pack, and I wanted present those differences based on my own personal real world use, having packed out nearly 150 lb loads with these packs. After all that, which one is the best multi day hunting pack? That answer isn’t black and white (at least not in my opinion), as there are a number of factors to consider.

  1. I know this is a year later, but these are the two packs I’ve been eyeballing. While you did a great unbiased review on both, my only issue is you’ve left me more educated on the packs and still undecided! 😂
    I’m leaning more towards the k4. I think between the flexibility and not having to shell out more money for a pannier carrrier, it’s the better option (granted I understand the crib carrier is around $60)

  2. I bought the IA8K and found a tag that says made in Taiwan. I wish I would’ve done more research. I assumed they were American made.

  3. I ran the k3 for two years and then I ran the initial ascent for two years. Both are good packs, but me personally I think the EXO is better

  4. As someone who films, having dual zippered side pockets is an absolute must have for dedicated lens storage.

    I don’t think the width of the Exo is as big of a deal as you make it seem. Last season I packed a front and rear elk quarter 3 miles. Yes it was heavy but I didn’t notice any problems with the frame of my k3.
